The phone rang insistently and Ville dragged himself out of his lonely bed with a groan. His head hurt, his lungs hurt, but then he had been out 'celebrating' all night. It didn't feel like a celebration. He picked up the phone.
“Ville Valo.” There was no answer, just the sound of sobs and Ville frowned. “Hello?”
“V-Ville.”
Ville's eyes widened. “Bam? What's wrong, sweetheart, why are you crying?”
Bam made a terrible noise, a bitter laugh crossed with a snort. “Why am I crying? Why am I crying?”
“Baby...”
“No, shut up, you asked me a question.” Bam's breath hitched, “You... Ville, you said you loved me, me, not her. Why Ville?” The sobs started again and Ville thought his heart might break, it wrenched at his soul to hear his lover so upset.
“I do love you, Bam, didn't you get my email?” Ville sighed. “I know I should have called but I figured it was safer this way.”
There was a pause in the sobs. “What?”
“It's not real Bammie, I'm only getting married for show.” Ville sat down on the floor and leaned against the wall. “Of course I love you, but I was under a lot of pressure, I thought this would be a good way to keep things looking normal. Jonna knows.”
“No.” Bam whispered.
“Yes, Bam,” Ville squeezed his eyes shut. He should have called Bam, what had he been thinking?
“Bammie, can't explain now, I've asked Jonna to marry me, she's agreed to help me cover us up. I love you and only you. I hope you understand that. Ville.” Bam's breath shuddered into his lungs as he read out Ville's email. “Oh God Ville. Oh God...”
“Bam, it's okay, right?” Ville swallowed hard, he hadn't thought that maybe Bam wouldn't agree to this. “Please baby, I'm sorry I hurt you, but I...”
“It's too late Ville.”
“No, don't say that!” Ville's heart almost stopped beating, “I can cancel it if you really...”
“No Ville, I mean it's too late because I...” Bam stopped abruptly.
“Bammie, what did you do?”
Bam started to cry again. “Oh God, Ville, I'm so sorry, I just couldn't bear the thought of living without you, I couldn't bear the thought of seeing you with someone else.”
Sudden horrifying worry caught Ville round the throat. “Bam what have you done? Tell me.”
“I.... I took an overdose. I'm so sorry Ville.”
“Oh God.” Ville felt like he'd been stabbed and he curled over, eyes pricking. “Bam get off the phone right now and call an ambulance!”
“It's too late, Ville, I've left it too long. I'm really tired Ville.”
Ville burst into tears. “No, don't say that, Bam please. Please you've got to call 911. Or call Ape.”
“There's nobody home.” Bam's voice slurred a little. “I want to be with you Ville, I want to stay here with you.”
“Bam.” Ville tried desperately to control his tears, “I love you so much, now please call an ambulance.”
“I couldn't live without you Ville, do you see? I couldn't.”
“How do you think I'm going to live without you Bammie?” Ville hugged his knees. Why did they have to live so far apart? Why was he so completely helpless? He was listening to the love of his life die and there was nothing he could do about it. His heart was breaking.
“Don't say that Ville, you've got so much to live for.” Bam sniffed quietly.
“Not without you my love.” Ville whispered, crying hopelessly.
“I'm gonna lay down now. Ville, will you sing for me?”
Sniffing back tears, Ville nodded. “Of course I will baby, which song would you like?”
“Join Me in Death.”
“Okay.” Ville took a deep breath to steady himself. He loved Bam with all his heart, if he had to listen to him die, he would do anything Bam asked of him. Quietly, Ville started to sing down the phone. He could hear Bam's sobs getting more and more quiet and he squeezed his eyes shut against the pain, determined to get through the song at least.
“Love you Ville.”
Ville came to the end of Bam's request. “Bam? Bam please talk to me... Bam!” Ville curled up on the floor and cried, great sobs racking his body as his heart died with his lover.

“Oh Ville, I'm so happy you're here.”
Ville put on his very best fake smile for Bam's mother. “How are you Ape?”
She smiled tremulously. “Oh not so good.”
“Yeah.” Ville gave her a hug and entered the funeral home. His band were all inside with Bam's friends so he went and stood by them. He wasn't sure what else to do. He felt like he'd been living in a nightmare since Bam had died but today everything was clear, horribly so, but with a sense of peace. He was going to take Bam up on his invitation.
The service was beautiful and Ville cried silently throughout, until he was called up to say a few words.
“Hi.” He managed a small smile and looked down at his hands. “I've known Bam for many years now. Everyone knows we were close friends but I don't think many people knew how much we loved each other.” A shocked gasp reverberated round the crowd, forcing Ville to pause. “It was easy to fall in love with him, he was so sweet and full of life, so willing to do anything for anyone he loved. It was the happiest day of my life when he told me he loved me too.”
Ville stopped and lifted his head. His band looked sad but not particularly surprised, everyone else looked completely shocked, except for Dunn who smiled regretfully at him.
“I was unfortunate, or maybe fortunate, enough to listen to him die and I'm sorry Ape, Phil, it was my fault. My fault for being stupid enough not to talk to Bam first. He killed himself for me and I'm sorry.” Ville got off the podium and walked over to the coffin where Bam looked like he was sleeping peacefully.
“I love you Bam, and I can't live without you either.” He leaned over and kissed Bam's lips gently. He could hear movement behind him and pulled the small revolver he'd brought with him, out of his pocket. “I'll see you soon, my love.” He put the gun to his head and pulled the trigger.
