Summary: Lex realises something
“Shit!” Lex wobbled precariously on the edge of the LexCorp Tower roof. He’d miscalculated. He wasn’t far enough away from the blast to be safe. The building shook again and Lex lost his footing. Opening his mouth to scream as he fell back, Lex felt his arm suddenly caught in a vice-like grip and his plummet stopped almost before it had begun.
Lex looked up and everything stopped. Suddenly, he didn’t see the steely determined face of Superman holding him, he just saw the eyes of the one person who’d ever really cared about him. The eyes of his farm boy, just as they had been when he’d been hanging over the edge of the walkway in the hidden level of the Smallville shit factory. Lex realised what had been in front of him the whole time.
“Clark,” he croaked, tears springing to his eyes. Even after all this time, everything he’d done, there was his farm boy, saving his life, *again*. “Why?”
“I have to,” Clark was weak from the blast, but he was still pulling him back up.
“Do you still…?” Lex couldn’t even finish the question as Clark met his eyes and the sharp pain in deep green, silenced him.
“Always,” Clark whispered.
This time Lex really did cry. He hadn’t known! Heart tearing open with all the repressed grief, anger and regret, Lex started to struggle.
“Lex,” Clark actually sounded worried, Lex laughed hysterically. “What are you doing?”
“Making things right,” Lex whispered, “I’m sorry.” Lex finally tugged himself free. “I love you,” he shouted through the whistling wind.
“No!” Clark reached out towards him, eyes dark with panic and shining with tears.
“I’m sorry,” Lex whispered, almost reaching back to his lost love as he fell unstoppably to the ground.
